Analysis of a Music Video-Research

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=og1Bxp6q3Co&ob=av2n
This video is called "Suddenly I See" by KT Tunstall.

Genre The genre is pop and this is obvious from the setting, lighting and clothing. The setting as you can see from this still is a vibrant animated town in which she is travelling around in by the use of a new york taxi. As she is travelling the use of tracking allows us to view the town changing as speakers appear on every building replicating the idea that music makes the world go round. The point of view shots typically show us what she sees. This also reads as though the music and lyrics are what’s important to the lead rather than looks which is generally what indie artists/groups represent.
The video is very vibrant and the use of bright colouring makes the video appear very well lit. This could be read into that this is a very uplifting song, which it is.

The lead is shown wearing a black dress and boots with purple boots and a trench coat when she is larger “than life” in the video. The same outfit is used throughout in with the genre as clothing is clearly not what is important it is what the lyrics and music represent.

NarrativeThe video has a linear structure as it does have a storyline although at times it is not so clear and it does have a beginning, middle and end. The video links to the lyrics in the sense that it illustrates and brings the lyrics to life and gently amplifying them so they seem a bit more intense. The video is very fun and plays on being larger than life itself. The artist plays a big part in the narrative as she is a participant in the story and a narrates it as the story changes. There isn’t really a disruption or dilemma in the story as she just talks of how she is going to get there and she does.

Media LanguageEditing is used a lot in this video as in the beginning time is manipulated in the sense that time is passing fast as the world is going past fast and towards the middle it is of a more normal pace. The edits are on time with the music. The editing makes the video very mythical and fantasy like. At the same time the video seems very primitive with all the animations . However, I do believe that the editing is conventional to this genre as it is playful and a bit random which quite a few pop bands try and get across such as The Hoosiers with their song "Goodbye Mr A".
Representation
The representation is not typical to how a girl is normally viewed in a video. The artist is not bikini clad and she is not being sexual. The artist is shown in a playful light. She is dressed in everyday clothing and carries a guitar and this is not what a woman is normally shown as. The only dismemberment is of her hand and that is not sexual and only goes on to show you her playing her guitar.
