Research - Vimeo: Past music video from students

I really enjoyed this music video because of how lively it was. Even though it was in black and white with the only colour being red that helped really bring out the important parts of the video such as the posters, her shoes and her earrings. I loved how the lyrics really matched what we saw and that the video helped Amplify what was being sung. It has no clear narrative but it does carry a very clear message and that she is on a mission to spread love and that everyone simply needs nothing but love. There were a good mix of close ups and medium to long shots that kept variety and the audience almost always guessing what type of shot they would see and from what angle they would see it from and I felt this way all the way through. It is also well edited together with very short cuts that keep pace with the beat of the music video and the mise en scene especially clothing and the little details like the earrings were spot on and make a big difference.

Overall I found it a very fun and entertaining video, even the people that they must have asked on the street to hold the signs were smiling and charming and it was a very creative idea and helped add the sense of a relaxed nature and reality to the music video that we just don't see much of anymore.

Planning - Mood Board

This is our mood board that we put together once we had chosen our song for the music video. It is a collection of pictures that give an idea and feel for the direction we are heading for the content of our music video. For example with the type of clothing we would want our artist to be in while we shoot and a taste of the scenery and environment we will shoot them in. It also includes types of shots that we might want to achieve in our music video, the most obvious being the close up of the sets of eyes. This is a very particular type of shot that we are sure we want to have in our video as a simple pair of eyes can give off so much emotion and are perhaps the most distinctive part of a person's body.

Moodboard-Planning

These images are of me and my group researching images for our moodboard for the song that we have chosen which is KT Tunstall "Suddenly I See"

As the songs genre and vibrancy we were researching casual clothing and lots of cityscape and natural elements.

Final Song-Planning

Our final song choice is the song "Suddenly I See" by KT Tunstall

This video as you can see is very animated and required a lot of editing.
Our video will differ from KT Tunstalls as our video will not be animated the shots will be real scenes.
We also plan on using a lot of real city scape and landmarks.
Furthermore, we are going to have more people involved in our video rather than just one singer.

Shortlist of potential songs-Planning

After looking at all of the songs available to us we narrowed our choice to two songs.
The first is by Coldplay and is called "Viva La Vida"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44xirQ55IgA&ob=av2n

The second is by KT Tunstall and is called "Suddenly I See"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AEoUa0Hlso&ob=av2n

Both songs are similar in genre and therefore could both be interpreted using a lot of city scape and imagery.

Vladimir Propp-Research

Vladimir Propp is famed for pinpointing the 31 functions of a narrative. He observed myths and typical childhood fairytales and came up with these conventions that all these storylines follow:
ABSENTATION:INTERDICTION:VIOLATION of INTERDICTION:RECONNAISSANCE: DELIVERY: TRICKERY: COMPLICITY: VILLAINY or LACK: MEDIATION: BEGINNING COUNTER-ACTION: DEPARTURE: FIRST FUNCTION OF THE DONOR: HERO'S REACTION:
RECEIPT OF A MAGICAL AGENT:GUIDANCE: STRUGGLE: BRANDING: VICTORY: LIQUIDATION: RETURN: PURSUIT: RESCUE: UNRECOGNIZED ARRIVAL: UNFOUNDED CLAIMS: DIFFICULT TASK: SOLUTION: RECOGNITION: EXPOSURE: TRANSFIGURATION:
PUNISHMENT: WEDDING:

This Taylor Swift video has a lot of these typical conventions as there is a lady who lacks a partner and eventually a hero comes along and saves her day and becomes her partner.

How artists promote themselves through Video and Blogs.

It is mostly smaller artists who are less well known that promote themselves through sites like youtube and through blogs.
But there are a few major bands that do promote themselves in this way such as AC/DC who have a youtube site and post up videos of them perhaps backstage or sneak peaks into the making of their new music video.
They also decorate their site in promotion material for example at the moment AC/DC was the main band that provided the soundtrack for Ironman 1 and 2 so they have the picture of the Ironman movie on their site. This links in with their Ironman 2 Album they released featuring all the songs from the movie.

Another example is Natasha Bedingfield who has her own youtube site too although it is a lot more simplistic compared to AC/DCs but the content is very similar.
