Due to the nature of our song we decided that we needed to use a lot of outdoor imagery in our video to emphasize the feel good factor. We also needed to break down the fourth wall to keep the audience in with our genre.
We kept to the conventions of our genre which contains themes "cheery/playful" by having our actress play and have fun infront of the camera.
We mainly stuck to the conventions of our genre as KT Tunstall is a singer/songwriter and this comes across in our video as she is playing and singing her song.
Our genre could be described as "BBC Pop" making it very raw and natural which is a theme we carried throughout our final products.
When we looked at both versions of KT Tunstall's Suddenly I See video we were more influenced by the animated one as it had a lot of city and landscape shown. Therefore, to keep to the generic conventions of our genre we would have to use a lot of natural city scape rather than a big expensive studio or theatre with branded props.
We did challenge one main convention for this video and that is a representation issue. This song and genre normally would be sung by a white, middle-class woman in her mid 20s and we used a black teenager instead. This ethnicity change really challenges stereotypes of genre as, as said before white women would normally sing this genre and black women are shown normally singing soul/jazz or R'n'B
The animation is clever but I mainly enjoyed the outdoorsy feel. The imagery also amplifies the lyrics making it more upbeat.
This video has similarities to KT Tunstall's "Suddenly I See" Larger than life version as it is very lively only this is mainly done by editing and a small amount of animation.
This part of the video has the lyrics " I feel like walking the world, like walking the world"
We chose to use this idea of feet moving.
We decided to use parallel editing for this part of the video so that you can see her in different areas "walking the world." This is a development of the generic convention as she is not shown in an animated town but outside with nature.
The standard version is a performance video of KT Tunstall and her band. This version isn't as good as the animated version in my opinion as it is disjuncture and therefore doesn't make it as upbeat as it is. However, the idea of her playing guitar is nice which we decided to use.
To keep with the outdoorsy feel we had to shoot her outside playing guitar in the natural light.
Our setting here is very natural and this theme is shown throughout to stick to the generic conventions.
Other influences
This was a remake that we found that had the basic idea of a girl around town which we wanted to execute through our video. The zoom at 0.30 and the singing done by the actress is cheesy and unprofessional so aside from the basic idea, the rest of the video in my opinion showed us what not to do.
Despite this not being a direct influence for us when we filming this is the basic idea that we wanted to reflect in our video (0.50 onwards).
Ancillary Print Product influences
My digipak and advertisement were mainly influenced by Alicia Keys.
The colours are very neutral and this is what I wanted to emanate through my products to reflect our genre. The text is very generic along with the images.
2) How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)?
3) How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Media technologies were used throughout the creation of all products including research, planning, constructing and evaluating.
This is a video of how I used Photoshop software for my the digipak.
The majority of my editing was using the burn tool to make the eyes stand out more and to define certain areas of the face.
This is a video of how I used Photoshop software for my advertisement.
I used photoshop mainly for inputting text and placing the text in different areas and colours to see it overall.
Here are some screenshots of how I used Quark Xpress.
Quark was used to import the images and get them the right size.
I also used Quark Xpress to add in text and other relevant features.
Digital Storyboard
Animatic
As you can see from the final edit of our video we have detoured from our animatic. The changes we made were the order of some of our ideas such as when the verse says "i feel like walking the world like walking the world" we originally planned to have scenic pictures of London but we changed this to a parallel edit of her feet walking across a wall and her on an island in the road. We also planned on having a close up of her eyes later on during the song but we soon changed this to a montage of her coming closer to the camera until we had a close up on her face.
4) What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Rough Cut Feedback
I included this feedback from our rough cut because this feedback we received changed a lot of our video.
The constructive criticism that was picked up on was the repetitive shots so next time we needed to have more variety.
Cinema Feedback
This is a video of the feedback we collected after the cinema.
The props were picked up on such as the guitar and they could see how we had improved our shots. The lip synching was also said to have been done well.
Class Feedback
Feedback collected in review of videos
Positive
These comments were very positive but had no critique which gave me the impression that we had succeeded in impressing our target audience.
Constructive
In relation to this particular feedback if we were to do this project again we would make sure there was not extra camera movement on the point of view shot.
Vimeo
As you can see our video has been played 6 times but has not been liked or commented on which doesn't allow room for reflection. Although this could be seen as what they really thought as it elements didn't appeal to them enough for them to like it
This period of time clearly shows the least amount of plays.
During this period our video was played and loaded most and this therefore shows more of an interest but this was mainly due to class feedback.
Ultimately, after all this feedback our improvements would be as follows:
-Make sure the camera is more steady in the point of view shots.
- More mise en scene of London
-Make sure all shots are well lit.
Overall, feedback was a very important part of our production when we were still making drafts of our products as it allowed us to improve it for our target audience.
I learnt a lot from the feedback as it allowed us to understand our target audience more and what they appeal to.
